Book Review: Sugar by Bernice L McFadden

Sugar is a wayward young lady who had has her fair share of hard times in life. Father unknown and mother who left her, she was raised by a few ladies of the evening, who taught her how to provide for herself. Tired of this lifestyle, she goes on the road…only to be met with the same thing. Sugar finds out that she has come into property and moves into this small town in Arkansas. The women feel threatened immediately, and the men want to know more. She moves next door to Joe and Pearl, a couple who are still grieving the tragic loss of their daughter, Jude. An unusual bond is formed between Pearl and Sugar, that no one seems to understand. Pearl behind to come out of her depressed state and Pearl slowly tones down her image.
This is my second book by @bernicemcfadden and is classified as Historical Fiction. It moved a little slow in the beginning, but once the secrets begin to be revealed, the pace picks up. Maybe I’m just a little biased to “The Book of Harlan.” I recommend this 💎💎💎💎 read, and can’t wait to check out another book by Ms. Bernice.
