Book Review: My Voice by Angie Martinez

Angie Martinez aka “The Voice of New York’s” love of hip-hop started when she was just a young girl. She would be outside, some would say a word, and she would rehearse a line of a popular song involving that word. She later went on to shadow her mother to the radio station where she worked. As the years went by, Angie would intern and work her way up the airwaves, including Hot 97, where she remained for about 20 years. It was here, where she began to develop lifelong friendships with artists such as Jay-Z, Fat Joe, Mary J Blige, Pharrell, and of course Q-Tip (just didn’t realize they used to date as well). She also talks about how difficult it was to walk away, in order to work for the competition…Power 105.1, and how her career has blossomed since then.

In this memoir, @angiemartinez talks about what is now known as the “East Coast vs West Coast Beef” and how Tupac flew her out to California, in order to give his account, how great he treated her and the reason why. She also makes mention of previous boyfriends being somewhat bothered by her being in an industry that is surrounded by so many men.

Love, financial instability and personal milestones also grace d the pages of this book. I’m so glad I finally decided to pick it and read it, and quickly passed it on to my son, who showed an interest in it as well. If you are into memoirs, then I highly recommend this 💎💎💎💎💎 read.
