In keeping with the Black History Month theme, I selected this amazing book by Delores Phillips.
Set in rural Georgia in 1958, we meet Tangy Mae Quinn, the sixth child of ten, loves her mother single mother Rozelle, as well as her siblings. Unfortunately, Rozelle believes that her beautiful dark-skinned daughter is the ugliest of her children. The things that this child had to endure was downright cruel and disgusting. Because she’s so smart, Tangy Mae has been selected amongst a group of others, to integrate the white high school in a nearby town. The only problem is…will she be able to convince her mother to allow her to do it.
As a mother, this book pissed me off. As a daughter, this book made me sad. As a reader, this book left me wanting more. Upon completion, I was devastated to find out that the author had passed away. I felt like she had so much more to share.
