In keeping with the Black History Month theme, today’s book is yet another classic introduced to me in the 7th grade.
Based on research and her family’s oral history, this historical novel by Margaret Walker introduces the reader to Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress. Set in various parts of Alabama before, during and after the Civil War, everyday experiences are brought to life.
The most moving and memorable part to me, will be when the slaves received word of the freedom they had been praying for, for so long, and yet…had no place to go.
