Mulatto: Daughter of America’s by Florencia LaChance

When I opened this book, I had no idea that it was the memoir of the illegitimate granddaughter of Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson aka The Godfather of Harlem. It recents horrific stories of abuse, abandonment, addiction and mental illness.

Florencia grew up in a house filled with love, until her stepfather came along. Treated differently, she often sought solace in other family members, and eventually found herself being shuffled around from place to place. It led to many years of instability and struggle.

At times, this heartbreaking story was hard to read, because each time I found myself cheering for Florencia, something would happen. I loved that things started to take shape when she embraced motherhood.
